Run in the Boonies

Chattanooga, TN

After finishing a marathon in 09 the words "never again" were spoken several times. However, after finishing the stumpjump 11 mi race I have a new love for the trails and I want to complete a 50k. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good spring 50k. Think slow and inexperienced.
Thanks

I have heard that the Dizzyfifties near Huntsville, AL is a great first ultra, I think they have a 50k and 50 mile option. It's a small race and the terrain isn't to crazy.

Thanks guys, I was considering the promise land 50k in Virginia. Its pretty tough but they have a liberal finish time limit. Ill def look into both of these.
that course profile for the promised land looks brutal. the winning times were a good thirty minutes longer than the Stumpjump. the climbs on it are very long but it does end on a long downhill

Dizzyfifties is done on short loops. No headphones allowed!

Here is one in KY. that has a sweet elevation profile and some pretty untechnical trails http://66.49.143.155/phpnuke/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpa...

The raccoon mtn marathon is an awesome course that isn't too tough.
Ran at Raccon Mtn. today, the trails up there are amazing. Its like a ski resort with black diamonds and stuff. Ill def check into that race in KY. Also, for the promise land the race is actually 34 miles. Apparently the race director has his own sense of distance.

Hey Jeremy,
i would suggest the raccoon mountain marathon in may but if you want a really gorgeous course a bit sooner check out the mount cheaha 50k in Alabama at the end of Feb. Several of us from Chatt go do it every year and its one of my favorites.

You might consider, the "Recover from the Holidays" 50k on New Years Eve in Huntsville, AL. It is a boring course, which will build mental dicipline. Ample aid and the price is like $10. No frills, just running. Contact, Fleet Feet in Huntsville, AL for details.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think that I have decided on the Oak Mtn 50k in March. All the reports I have read say that is an enjoyable course and the elevation doesn't look to bad for a first timer.

I've ran on those trails but never ran that event. I know that the course is long(33 milish) and there's not a lot of major climbing, but a lot of rolling type hills.
You may also want to think about Black Warrior in February. I have done both- sort of. Oak Mountain 2008 was my first ultra, and I did the 25K option at Black Warrior the month before. Don't let the course profile of Oak Mountain fool you, it's still tough. They're both good, well-run races, so you can't go wrong there. In addition, we lucked out and had nearly perfect weather at both. Unless things change, at least a few of us are going to Black Warrior. I'm signed up. You might want to get a little more input from those who have done the full 50K at BW and OM , before you make up your mind for sure. I'm pretty sure Kris and Randy have done both, and they are certainly better judges of which would make a better first than I. One thing to think about: at BW, you can switch distances from 50K to 25K or 25K to 50K right up til race time. So, you might consider adding BW 25, if you already signed up for Oak, then if you feel froggy on race day, you could jump to the 50....or not. All that being said, don't let me scare you off OM if you've made up your mind. Train well, and you'll be fine. It was my first, and I have no regrets.
