and has anyone tried the invo8's, any info on theses would be great too.....

thanks brian higdon..
There are lots of great shoes out there; it's finding a fit that works for your foot that is key. Knowing if you are a neutral runner or if you pronate will determine what way to go. I overpronate (a lot) and have had a few ankle injuries, so I have to go with a very stable shoe with motion control, so my choices are fairly limited. I'm not sure where you live, but Joey at Fast Break is great at analyzing your gait. (I also took a bag of shoes to Dee at Archer PT so she could see me run in a variety first hand.) Also, the type of terrain (rock, mud, gravel, packed trail, etc) you run may affect your choices as well.

My favorite shoes are by Vasque. Check out their Aether Tech ... and look out for their newest shoe debuting this spring, the MindBender. (I've been running in their Velocity line the last few years).

LaSportiva makes several great models - I like the beefier Imogene, but several people I know use the Wildcat and Fireblade.

Montrail's latest addition, the Mtn Masochist, seems to be a hit... and pretty light.

Inov8 has such a big lineup.... hard to know where to begin :) the numbers in the model names = the shoe's weight, so that may help.

but again, weight isn't everything; get something that fits YOUR foot!
I have heard zero complaints from any of the INOV8s. I really liked La Sportivas old Imogene, but they discontinued them. The Brooks trail shoe is good I think, and the Saucony feels overly padded like a road shoe in my opinion. The Asics were great for about 100 miles and then turned in to house slippers with no support or protection.

The key is throwing them out as soon as they start to wear out... I have hurt myslef pretty badly by running in a shoe too long after its life should have been over.

The other key is going to see Joey or Michael at FastBreak, and like Cathi said, go for the fit and feel of your foot, not another's opinion or what is popular... Trail runners are not like road bikers or triathletes who will judge you for the equipment you sport :)
well i went to fastbreak and picked up a pair of inov8 roclites 295's run a few training runs with them and was great.. then i ran the lookout 10k with them and loved them!! still want to try a few more before i settle on one shoe that i like... salomon speed cross 2's and inov8 x-talon 212's... has anyone tryed any of the 2????
Brian,
I ran the 10k in my X-Talons. They are very light, but have great traction. You will not want to do anything too long in them probably like you would your 295's. I consider it a racing shoe as do most people on the Inov-8 team. I'm not sure if I helped you at the store or not, but if you wear a size 12 and want to see how the Talons feel just come back in and you can have a look at mine..

well, i went back to fastbreak and got another pair of inov8 roclite 295's, i realy like this shoe, it fits me well, just want to brag on a good shoe .....
I'm going to brag on the new Mindbender by Vasque. I picked up a pair a few days before the Southern 6 - they fit so well, I decided to race in them (even with only wearing them around the house). My feet loved them!
Although still relatively new to trailrunning, I have a pair of the Mountain Masochist that I really am loving, quite light for a trail shoe and I just feel good in them. I am a big guy as far as runners go (205 lbs and 71 inches tall), if that helps. I got a pair of Brooks Cascadia 5's also and am very very pleased with them too.
