You may also want to think about Black Warrior in February. I have done both- sort of. Oak Mountain 2008 was my first ultra, and I did the 25K option at Black Warrior the month before. Don't let the course profile of Oak Mountain fool you,…

I've ran on those trails but never ran that event. I know that the course is long(33 milish) and there's not a lot of major climbing, but a lot of rolling type hills.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think that I have decided on the Oak Mtn 50k in March. All the reports I have read say that is an enjoyable course and the elevation doesn't look to bad for a first timer.

Ran at Raccon Mtn. today, the trails up there are amazing. Its like a ski resort with black diamonds and stuff. Ill def check into that race in KY. Also, for the promise land the race is actually 34 miles. Apparently the race director has his own…

that course profile for the promised land looks brutal. the winning times were a good thirty minutes longer than the Stumpjump. the climbs on it are very long but it does end on a long downhill Dizzyfifties is done on short loops. No headphones…

Thanks guys, I was considering the promise land 50k in Virginia. Its pretty tough but they have a liberal finish time limit. Ill def look into both of these.

I have heard that the Dizzyfifties near Huntsville, AL is a great first ultra, I think they have a 50k and 50 mile option. It's a small race and the terrain isn't to crazy. www.dizzyfifties.com
