Upchuck 50K- Grim’s Perspective
November 19, 2011
I have run this race every year and each time there is a different feel to the event. This year was no exception. The allotted number of race participants is strictly limited and registration fills quickly, so it was a big surprise this year when nearly 20% of the field who had registered failed to show up at the race start. I believe that it was a direct…

Duncan Ridge 30K & 50K
November 19, 2011
I originally had no intentions of running in this inaugural event. A friend sustained an injury shortly before the race and suggested I use the vacated slot. I off-handedly told another friend I would take it if the Race Director would let me in- knowing that it’s highly unusual for this to happen. As luck would have it, a few emails among…

I have been actively involved with competitive sports since the age of 11 (or so) when I first swam in a youth competitive swim program. Swimming has remained a mainstay for the balance of my life but along the way I have added other…

December 18 was the Lookout 50 mile trail race. Although I live in Chattanooga, I had never done this home town race. I am familiar with most of the course because we run on the trails frequently, but the portion of the race that goes through Lula Lake to Nickajack was new to me. When the alarm clock went off on Saturday morning, I was less than enthusiastic about getting up. I am not an early morning person but I usually feel a bit more perky on race mornings than I did. For whatever reason,…

So it's less than a month since Pinhoti 100, and I am supposed to run the Pine Mountain 40 mile trail race. I had signed up for it quite a bit in advance because they cap the race at 150 runners and it always fills up quick. I ran this race two years ago and loved it. The GUTS crew always does an awesome job putting on races, so I was eager to come back. However, in the days leading up to the race, I was not sure how recovered I was. Except for a 17 mile training run the weekend…

On Friday, my dad and I headed down to Cove Lake State Park just outside of Knoxville for the Cumberland 50k. There was a good group of folks from Chattanooga going down for the race, Dreama, Mark, Wendy, Sal, and me, so I was really looking forward to a great day with friends. This race also had a special meaning becase last year I had to quit by mile 4 due to what I later found out was compartment syndrome that resulted in my having surgery about 3 weeks later. Therefore, I was determined to…

Well, I ran my first 50K Saturday in the Rock Creek Stump Jump. I have run marathons on the road before, but nothing compares to running on trails. The extra miles really don't feel much different, even though I was out there twice as long. The aid stations, the help, the course and competitors kept me going. Early in the race, I got off course with a group of runners, adding 20 minutes to my time. It took about 13 miles before we caught the group that was just ahead of us. I have to look up…

Not sure if fellow Boonie runners are aware of the new trails inside ES Park. That is the park between VW and Ooltewah, about 7000 acres of public land. SORBA is working daily on the trail construction and needs help. The park will open on 10/11/2010, or so I am told. We will then have trails on this side of town. No more schlepping over to Raccoon and Lookout for a trail run. SORBA is glad to have runners potentially using the trail and I'm thankful mountain bikers keep the trail smooth and…

This past Saturday I ran the Paris Mountain Xterra 7k in Greenville, SC. I ended up having to miss the Scenic City half marathon
back in May due to pre-wedding planning and obligations, so this was the first
race I’d been able to run in awhile.…

Disclaimer: This is long, likely filled with grammar problems and misinformation due to brain function being low after so much contact with ferns and mountain laurel.
Well I decided to do the Laurel Highlands Ultra on kind of a whim. Sarah Woerner and Mark Mason were the original two who then convinced Dreama Campbell to join them. Then Sal Coll and I with a week and a half to go decided to join in on the “fun”. Carl Woerner was going to do the 50k version at the race but…

Several years ago Jamie Dial told me about his first solo attempt at running the Appalachian Trail throughout the Great Smoky Mountain NP, 72 miles. My first thought was--ridiculous! The concept was so intimidating but at the same time it fired me up. Over half of the run is above 5,000 feet and reaches more than 6,000 feet 6 times, pretty good for east coast standards. To cover that much ground over that kind of terrain, 18,000 feet of climbing over the 72 miles, had to be an epic…

Saturday, May 22nd was a great day for a race. The skies were clear and the starting temperature was in the upper 60's low 70's. There was quite a crowd at the start also. I heard the announcer say that this year had twice as many runners as the previous year.
I had no idea what to expect as I've never run the trails and hadn't competed against any of these guys before. All I know was that Matt Sims had run a 3:11 on it before, and I wanted to beat that time. I actually wanted to…

Thought I'd offer up my thoughts a some trail shoes I've been testing over the past month or so. I have between 50 and 300 miles on each pair. They below are my opinions. They are:
1. Montrail - Mountain Masochist
2. Brooks - Cascadia 5
3. Northface - Single Track
4. Salomon - XT Wings
Montrail Mountain Masochist - RATING: 4.5 of 5.
This shoe has a…
